May is Wildfire Awareness Month—a good reminder that here in South Texas, it doesn’t take much for a small spark to turn into a fast-moving grass fire.

At Bexar Bulverde Fire Department, we respond to these calls every year. The encouraging part is that many of them can be prevented with a few simple steps around your home and property.

Prevention is the key, and it starts close to home.

Simple Ways to Help Prevent Wildfires:

  • Keep a clear space around your home

Dry grass, leaves, and brush can act as fuel. Clearing a buffer around your home helps slow or stop fire from spreading.

  • Be mindful with outdoor equipment

Lawn mowers, chainsaws, and trailers can create sparks—especially in dry conditions. Avoid use during the hottest, windiest parts of the day.

  • Dispose of cigarettes properly

A single improperly discarded cigarette can ignite dry grass quickly. Always use a proper container.

  • Use caution with outdoor burning

Always follow local burn bans and weather conditions. Fires can shift quickly with changing winds.

  • Secure trailer chains

Chains dragging on pavement can throw sparks and start roadside fires.

  • Have a plan

Know how you would leave your home quickly if needed, and keep important items easy to access.

Most wildfires in our area are caused by human activity—not nature. That means small, everyday decisions can make a big difference.

We’re proud to serve this community, and we’re here to help keep it safe. If we all do our part, we can reduce the risk and protect our homes, our neighbors, and the land around us.
