Take steps to protect your home from the increasing risk of Wildfires.

Research around home destruction vs. home survival in wildfires points to embers and small flames as the main way that most homes ignite in wildfires. Embers are burning pieces of airborne wood and/or vegetation that can be carried more than a mile through the wind and can cause spot fires and ignite homes, debris and other objects.

There are methods for homeowners to prepare their homes to withstand ember attacks and minimize the likelihood of flames touching the home. Experiments, models and post-fire studies have shown homes ignite due to the condition of the home and everything around it, up to 200’ from the foundation. This is called the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ), according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Firewise Community Program

Firewise USA® is a voluntary program that provides a framework to help neighbors get organized, find direction and take action to increase the ignition resistance of their homes and community. Bexar County currently hosts several Firewise USA recognized neighborhoods.

Wildfire Evacuation Plan

Another important feature of wildfire safety includes your family’s evacuation plan. This plan can help you protect your home, create a clear evacuation plan, and ensure your family is ready to act quickly.
